Amosun Set to Allocate Shopping Complex

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, on Saturday, announced that all was now set for the allocation of modern shopping complexes, built by the state government, to traders on Thursday March 30, 2017.

The governor disclosed this in the course of interaction with traders at Omida market, Itoku market, Sapon market and Isale Igbein market when he visited on Saturday evening.

In the course of what appears like a sensitisation walk, the governor personally went round to interact with the market men and women while intimating them with plans to allocate the ultra modern shopping complexes on Thursday, March 30, 2017.

In the course of the interaction, the governor explained that stores in the shopping complexes would be allocated first to traders who were dislocated to pave way for those modern shopping complexes to be constructed.

"You will recall that back then, we took your photographs, did video recordings and took other records of your shops that were affected.

Now we are simply going back to the records and would allocate, first to those who were affected," Governor Amosun said.

Explaining why it took a while for the newly built ultra modern shopping complexes to be allocated, the governor said it was due to the need to ensure that all categories of traders were catered for.

"We realised that not all our people can afford to take up shops within the newly built ultra modern shopping malls not only because of cost but also due to the number of shops available. So we decided to ensure that no one was left behind by constructing some additional market stalls and shops.

Now they are all ready and that is why we are allocating them by this week Thursday," Governor Amosun said.

He added that this would not be a one off exercise as the state government is ready to build additional modern market places in order to accommodate more traders who have signified interest but cannot participate in the current phase.

The newly built ultra modern shopping complexes are fitted with modern conveniences and state of the art facilities, including lifts and escalators.

These fully air conditioned, multi-level modern shopping complexes are set to permanently change the looks and feel of a public marketplace in Ogun State.

Indeed, they are a testament to the success of the Governor Amosun led administration's Mission to rebuild Ogun State.

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, on Friday, affirmed that Ogun State is the mining capital of Nigeria.

The governor stated this while receiving the Minister for Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi who had come on a courtesy visit to the Governor's office in Abeokuta.

Corroborating his claim, Governor Amosun revealed that recent statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, indicates that Ogun State accounts for about 40 per cent of the mining resources in the country, which makes it the leading state in the mining sector in Nigeria.

While expressing satisfaction with this development, which is a testament to the industrialisation effort of his administration, Governor Amosun however complained that this has not reflected in the revenue profile of the state from the Federal government.

Shortly after the visit, the Minister and the Governor then proceeded to the June 12 Cultural Center, Abeokuta, for a town hall meeting with stakeholders in the mining sector in Ogun State.

Speaking at the townhall meeting, Dr. Fayemi stated that Ogun State is not only the mining capital of Nigeria but also the bitumen capital of the country.

Looking at these developments, Governor Amosun said the stakeholders' meeting came at the right time especially in this critical period in the annals of the nation's economy where focus is more on the non-oil sector.

Governor Amosun added that the mining sector has great potentials to contribute to the Gross Domestic Product of the country.

He added that mining holds huge potentials for employment and wealth creation.

In spite of all these, the Governor however warned that the welfare and condition of the people in the local areas where these mining exploration is happening must be put into consideration.

Dr. Fayemi on his part emphasized the need for the Federal and state governments to synergize towards maximising the opportunities in the mines and steel sector in order to enhance the nation's economic development.

The Minister added that the Federal government takes cognisance of the potentials of Ogun State in the area of mining as the state ranks best in the country among the states where quarry activities thrives.

He assured that all the mining related challenges affecting the state would be addressed.

In his welcome address, at the Stakeholders' meeting, the State commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, revealed that the meeting was meant to bring stakeholders in the mining industry together and exchange ideas on the best ways to maximize the potentials presented by the naturally endowed resources in the state.

In their separate goodwill messages, the representatives of Dangote group, Lafarge Africa and Quarry and Mining Association affirmed that any industrialist in Nigeria who is not in Ogun State is still not an industrialist.

The governor stated this, on Tuesday, shortly after the state executive council held a special session to celebrate women as part of activities marking the 2017 International Women's month.

"More than the Beijing declaration, I believe that women are very good in the way they handle things and this is why our administration has entrusted them with many strategic roles," Governor Amosun said.

He added that women, just like their male counterparts, are equally endowed by God and should therefore be empowered as of right.

PRESS RELEASE

AMOSUN CONDEMNS CUSTOMS INCESSANT KILLINGS, RECKLESSNESS

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has condemned in strong terms the killing of two persons by men of the Nigeria Customs Service, today at Kobape in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of the State, along the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway.

It was reported that some officers of the Service, in a hot chase of a vehicle suspected to be carrying bags of rice along the expressway, shot at it, killing the driver and another person instantly. On seeing the consequence of their action, and in apparent fear of possible reprisal by symphatisers, they immediately abandoned the chase and fled the scene.

It took the intervention of a delegation of the State Government and security agencies including the Army, Police, DSS, TRACE and others, that visited the scene on the instruction of the Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, CON, FCA to douse the tension created by aggrieved motorists and residents who had blocked the expressway protesting the killing thereby making the road impassable for over three hours.

While we do not support economic sabotage, we condemn the needless killing and will not tolerate recklessness and unprofessional conduct by officers of the Customs Service.

You will recall that only two weeks ago, the State woke up to the unpleasant news of shops of rice broken into overnight by Customs officers in a market at Sango purportedly to recover “smuggled” bags of rice in questionable circumstances. While we have been trying to manage public perspective trailing that incident, this dastardly incident occurred again.

We maintain that this bravado use of power hundreds of kilometres inland away from the international borders by Customs Officers cannot be justified by any logic. We are of the belief that if these officers had demonstrated this level of patriotic zeal in the discharge of their duties at the border posts and several custom checking points located along the roads leading from the borders, the public would have been saved these agonies and loss of lives.

We hereby further appeal to the top echelon of the Customs Service to call their officers in the State to order and embrace proper decorum and civility in their operations so as to avoid acts capable of breaching public peace and putting Government in a bad light among the people.

As a matter of urgency, we also demand a detailed and transparent investigation into the unprofessional conduct of the Customs Officers involved with a view to bringing them to book as a deterrent to others.

In the mean time, we appeal to our people to remain calm as Government continues to engage every one concerned to prevent a reccurence.

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has charged industries operating in Ogun State to embrace backward integration of their processes and ensure that their inputs are sourced locally.

Governor Amosun at the Ground breaking ceremony for Lagos-Ibadan Rail Network

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, on Tuesday, attended the ground breaking ceremony of segment two, Lagos-Ibadan rail network, with extension to Lagos Port Complex, Apapa, held in Lagos.

The segment flagged off on Tuesday, by the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, is an integral part of the Nigerian Railway Modernization Project, Lagos-Kano.

Apart from the fact that over 80 per cent of the stretch of Lagos-Ibadan expressway falls within the territory of Ogun State, the project also ties into the Ogun Light rail network, which the Senator Ibikunle Amosun-led administration is spearheading in Ogun State.

When completed, the first phase of the Ogun light rail project, which runs from Abeokuta to connect the Lagos-Ibadan rail network, would greatly reduce the travel time between Abeokuta and Lagos.

It will also further increase the value of the state government estate development projects along that axis including the likes of Orange Valley Estate; HID Awolowo Estate; PMB Estate layout and the New Makun City Development project among others.

We Will Tackle Illegal Aliens – Amosun

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has promised to assist the Nigerian Immigration Service, NIS, in tackling the menace of illegal aliens.

The governor stated this, on Friday, while playing host to the new Comptroller of Immigration Service, Ogun State Command, Mr. Oluwatoba Bayeroju, at his Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta office.

“Due to our status as the most industrialised state in Nigeria, I am aware that we are prone to the infiltration of illegal aliens. Some of them are here working for some companies within Ogun State,” Governor Amosun said.

He added that, “Some of these companies don’t correctly declare the number and or status of the foreigners within their organization in order to evade tax payment. In view of this, we will see to the possibility of assisting the Immigration Service to have offices in all our local government and local council development areas. This will be in addition to the ones already existing in our border communities.”

In the same vein, the Ogun State governor also advised the Immigration boss to provide data showing the number of Nigerians applying for their travel passports at the Ogun State Command of the NIS adding that this will help in making the case for an expansion of the passport issuing process and facilities in the state.

“Again because of our status as the industrial hub of Nigeria as well as our proximity to Lagos, what you find is that the number of people processing their passport in the Ogun State Command has risen tremendously thereby placing the facilities here under a lot of pressure,” Governor Amosun said.

He assured the visiting Immigration boss of the fact that he is aware of this challenge saying, “I have personally been to that your office and I know the kind of pressure you go through.”

Speaking earlier, Mr. Bayeroju commended the Ogun State governor for transforming the entire landscape of the gateway state.

“I left this state 25 years ago as a young officer. Now I am back as state Comptroller and I can barely make my way around because the whole place has been transformed within the last five years,” Bayeroju said.

He also seized the occasion to reel out some of the challenges facing the NIS Ogun State Command, which he listed as influx of illegal aliens, need for offices in all LGs and LCDAs as well as inadequate booklets for the production of Nigerian passports to a growing number of applicants.
