There are about five agencies handling housing and related matters in Ogun State. These are Ogun State Housing Corporation, Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation, Bureau of Lands, Survey and Physical Planning, Ministry of Housing and Gateway Property and Development Limited..
Yet despite the multiplicity of agencies with the attendant overlaps, inefficiencies and costs, out of the 26 existing Housing Estates only two (GRA at Ibara in Abeokuta and Ijebu- Ode) have relatively good infrastructure facility, while the infrastructure at Asero Estate in Abeokuta and GRA Sagamu are substandard. Ten other estates lack any semblance of infrastructural facilities and a whooping 12 Estates have been abandoned, a colossal waste and a drain on taxpayers money. Our intervention in housing sector will have both policy and implementation modalities components.
The mandates and activities of the various agencies in the sector will be streamlined to achieve operational efficiency and effectiveness. The existing mortgage system will be revamped to facilitate ease of access to mortgage loans to eligible beneficiaries.!
Low cost housing schemes will be embarked on in conjunction with the private sector. The proximity of our state to Lagos, the nation’s commercial capital, confers some advantage that could be leveraged. A major requirement for revitalizing the abandoned estates is the provision of infrastructures like good road network, portable water and communal spaces for recreation and other social functions.
