The emergence of Ado-Odo/Otta Local Government dates back to May 1989, when the defunct Ifo Local Government was merged with Ado-Odo/Igbesa areas of the defunct Egbado South Local Government.
Ado-Odo/Otta Local Government is one of the 20 Local Government areas of Ogun State located in the West Senatorial district. It is situated strategically besides the nation’s Commercial/Industrial nerve centre; Lagos. The Local Government shared boundaries with Yewa South, Ifo and Ipokia Local Government areas of Ogun State and Ifako-Ijaiye, Alimoso , Ojo and Badagry Local Government areas of Lagos State. Geographically, it is situated within the tropical zone lying between 60o and 47o N of the equator and 20.33o E and 30.18o E of the Greenwich’s Meridian. It covers a land area of 1,263 square kilometers with a Terrain of 1,010.4 sq kilometer plain land and about 252.6 square kilometers bad Terrain comprising of 16% riverine and 4% hilly regions. The Council is largely within Guinea Savannah cum tropical rain forest vegetation. It is the industrial nerve centre of the State housing over 75% of industries, the more reasons for its fair share of all kinds of pollutions, disrupted ecology and associated challenges of infrastructure.

The Local Government has an estimated population of 527,242 people (Male 262,523 & Female 265,719) (2006 Census) with about four hundred and fifty (450) towns, villages and settlements. The Local Government is peopled mainly by the Aworis (the original owners of the land), Eguns and Yewas (Egbados) and other sub-ethnic groups like Egba settlers in Iju, Atan, Ijoko and Sango-Otta. Expatriates and other ethnics groups have equally found the entity a congenial place for settlement. Apart from Ota, Ado-Odo, Igbesa and Agbara, other major towns are Iju-Ota, Owode, Ilogbo, Iyesi, Ijako, Ajibode, Abule Iroko and host of others.

Primary and Secondary Schools enrolment are encouraging for both sexes but there is growing preference for private schools. The general phenomenon of growing private initiatives in education sector has to do with the fact that Ado-Odo/Otta Local Government Area is a commercial and industrial hub of the state. It also has its fair share of the middle class and elites presence and its nearness to Lagos.
