SAGAMU LOCAL GOVERNMENT

HISTORY OF SAGAMU LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Sagamu Local Government was established on the 23rd of September, 1991. It was carved out from Ijebu Remo Local Government. It is bounded by Odogbolu Local Government, Ikenne Local Government, Obafemi Owode Local Government and Lagos State in the East, North and West respectively. Remo dialect of Yoruba Language is the main Language. The Local Government is named after the headquarters as SAGAMU.

Occupation of the people is mainly farming. The Local Government has the largest Kolanut Market in Nigeria. The Local Government is about 47KM from the State Capital, Abeokuta.

POPULATION

As at 2006 Population Census, Sagamu Local Government Area has a total Population Figure of 253,421 people.

ADMINISTRATION

The Administrative seat of the Local Government is located in Sagamu Township. By all standards, Sagamu Local Government is located at the center of Ogun State and is an Urban Settlement given the available evidence of Physical, Human Economic Development, Social Infrastructure, forming part of the familiar Landscaping of the Local Government.

Sagamu Local Government is divided into Fifteen (15)  Political Wards, namely.

Ward 1              -           Oko, Epe & Itunla I

Ward 2              -           Oko, Epe & Itunla II

Ward 3              -           Aiyegbami/Ijoku

Ward 4              -           Sabo I

Ward 5              -           Sabo II

Ward 6              -           Itunsoku/Oyebajo

Ward 7              -           Ijagba

Ward 8              -           Latawa

Ward 9              -           Ode – Lemo

Ward 10            -           Ogijo/Ikosi

Ward 11            -           Surulere

Ward 12            -           Isote

Ward 13            -           Simawa

Ward 14            -           Agbowa

Ward 15            -           Ibido/Itun Alara.

EMPOWERMENT

The Local Government under the Leadership of Hon. Daisi Akintan set up Market committee who are members of the public and party to assist the members of staff in generating revenue and also assist in improving the relationship with the Babaloja/Iyaloja’s Market Women.

The Chairman also made it mandatory for all Political functionaries to appoint Personal and Special assistance at least Two (2) people which gave rise to empowering of about 200 people since February, 2007.

The salary of this Special Assistance is deducted monthly on each Political functionary package before final payment is paid. The Local Government also employed able bodied men and women through a contractor who are engaged in sweeping of all the major roads in Sagamu – the Headquarters of the Local Government.

AGRICULTURE

The people of Sagamu Local Government Area are predominantly Farmers. Hence; the Local Government is endowed with Agricultural Resources widely distributed all over the Area. Some of the major Cash Crops/Food Crops in the Local Government Area are Kolanut, Cassava, Melon, Maize and Water Yam.

EDUCATION

Sagamu Local Government Area has 53 Public Primary Schools and 24 Secondary Schools. Similarly, there are also about 107 Private Primary and Secondary Schools located across the Local Government Areas. The Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital is located in the Local Government Area.

TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONS

The Institution of Obaship and Traditional Rulers occupy a prominent position in the Local Government Area. Currently, the Local Government has Twenty – Seven Traditional Rulers under the Leadership of His Royal Majesty – Oba (Dr.) Michael Adeniyi Sonariwo (CON), The Akarigbo of Remo Land.
