MAIN FUNCTIONS AND OBJECTIVES
(a) DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC PROSECUTION
Functions:
(1) |
Responsible for the exercise of powers of criminal prosecutions conferred on the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice under the constitution |
(2) |
Handles advisory work for the Nigeria Police and undertakes any other miscellaneous duties |
(3) |
Handles the prosecution of more serious cases like murder, manslaughter, forgery, rape, house-breaking, burglary and armed robbery |
(4) |
Handles several criminal appeal cases on various offences both at the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. |

(b) DEPARTMENTS OF CIVIL LITIGATION AND ADVISORY SERVICES
Functions and Objectives:
(1) |
Issuing necessary ‘Legal Advice' on civil matters to various Government Departments and Agencies, Corporations, Ministries and Parastatals |
(2) |
Representing the State Government, Local Government, Government Officials sued in the performance of their duties in civil matters in courts |
(3) |
Vetting and drafting of ‘Agreements' and other documents intended to be entered into by the government or any of its Agencies |
(4) |
Instituting actions in respect of claims on behalf of the Government |
(5) |
Defending civil action brought against the State Govt. or its Agencies |
(6) |
Rendering ‘Legal Advice' on various petitions received from members of the public, addressed to either the Executive Governor or the Attorney-General. |

(c) DEPARTMENT OF LEGAL DRAFTING AND LAW DEVELOPMENT
Functions and Objectives:
(1) |
Responsible for the drafting of all Executive Bills for enactment by the State House of Assembly |
(2) |
Drafting and vetting of Commercial Agreements involving the Government, her Agencies and third parties |
(3) |
Preparing for Ministries and Agencies, drafts of orders, legal notices, Regulations and other subsidiary enactments |
(4) |
Handles for Local Government, the vetting or and drafting of Bye-Laws |
(5) |
Handles ‘Legal Advisory' services. |

(d) DEPARTMENT OF THE ADMINISTRATOR-GENERAL AND PUBLIC TRUSTEE
Functions and Objectives:
(1) |
Administration of ‘Estates' and ‘Trustee' of persons who die intestate or whose estates have been directed to be managed by this office. |
(2) |
Collects ‘Administrative Charge' for the administration of the estates |
(3) |
Generates oaths fees paid when affidavits are sworn before the Commissioner for oaths within the Ministry |
(4) |
‘AG & PT' functions as the secretary to the ‘Advisory Committee' on the prerogative of mercy. |

(e) DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION
Functions and Objectives:
(1) |
Responsible for the finance and administration matters in the Ministry |
(2) |
Maintenance of vehicles and other infrastructure in the Ministry |
(3) |
Maintenance of fiscal discipline and efficient management of available resources. |
