Ministry Of Women Affairs and Social development

INTRODUCTION

This ministry, which came into being in June, 2003 is charged with the responsibility of improving the economic and social standard of Women and Children in particular and promotion of social stability and development in the state.

 

 MAIN FUNCTIONS AND OBJECTIVES

1.

Co-ordination and processing of economic empowerment programmes

2.

Implementation of Community and Rural Development Programmes

3.

Mobilization of the private sector for active participation in the rural development efforts of the State Government

4.

Mobilization of people to form Community Development Associations (CDA)

5.

Registration and coordination of CDAs and Community-based Organizations

6.

Supervision of Social Development Institutions and Women Development Centers

7.

Probation Service e.g. Adult probation, etc.

8.

School and Medical Social Works

9.

Family Casework and matrimonial reconciliation

10.

Rehabilitation of refugees, deportees, ex-prisoners, etc

11.

Coordination of researches on social welfare and Community-based vocational rehabilitation

12.

Liaison with Women Voluntary and NGOs including Women Cooperative Societies

13.

Data Banks / Information Centers on Women Programmes

14.

Promotion of Arts and Crafts for export

15.

Supervising Motherless Babies and Abandoned Children's Homes

16.

Adoption and Foster Care of Children

17.

Rehabilitation, vocational training and Cooperative Societies for the disabled

18.

Institutional Care of the Aged Destitute

19.

Supervision and monitoring of the Social Welfare Committee

20.

Liaison with National and State Social Workers

21.

Registration and monitoring of Day Care Centres

22.

Provision of counseling service to Women and Children in collaboration with FIDA (Federation of International Women Lawyers).

 

DEPARTMENTS AND UNITS

This Ministry is divided into four (4) Departments namely:

i. Finance and Administration Department
ii. Community Development Department
iii. Social Welfare Department
iv. Women Empowerment Services


Each of these departments is further subdivided into the following units:

(b) Accounts Unit
(ii) Community Development Department is subdivided into:
(a) Community Self-Help Projects Unit
(b) Community Organization and Education Unit
(c) Research and Training Unit
(iii) Social Welfare Department is subdivided into:
(a) Adult Welfare Services
(b) Juvenile Welfare Services
(c) Relief and Rehabilitation Services
(d) Research, Planning and Training Units
(iv) Women Empowerment Services is subdivided into:
(a) Women Affairs and NGOs Unit
(b) Child Development Unit
(c) Counseling and Legal Aid Unit
(d) Planning, Research and Training Unit.
