The authority of Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS) and the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to harmonise daily tickets issued to traders in markets.
The Chairman, OGIRS, Mr. Olugbenga Olaleye speaking during the signing of the MoU and official launch of the harmonised daily tickets at Oba’s Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said the agreement between OGIRS and LGAs was a step to ensure proper revenue management that would help develop markets and take the State to a greater height.
Olaleye pointed out that the new arrangement would be more efficient in the process of collecting taxes in the market, as well as eradicating issuance of fake tickets.
On his part, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Afolabi Afuape in his remarks said that the harmonisation has a legal backing, assuring that the initiative would not only increase the revenue of the LGAs, but avail market men and women opportunity to fulfill their civic responsibilities with ease.
Earlier in his address, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Revenue, Mr. Adegbenga Adeshina, said the collaboration would enhance revenue generation in the State and at the Local Government levels.
In her remarks, the Iyaloja of Yewaland, Alhaja Anifat Abass, noted that market men and women would always support any government policy that would improve the socio-economic activities in the State, urging the concerned authorities to ensure effective monitoring to achieve the objectives of the agreement and called for upgrade of some markets across LGAs.
In his reaction, the Chairman, of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter, who doubles as the Transition Committee Chairman, Odeda LGA, Comrade Semiu Lawal pledged the readiness of the Chairmen to support the laudable initiative, appealing to his counterparts to ensure a conducive market environment.
